RV Departure Checklist

Exterior Checks

  • Secure Awning: Ensure the awning is retracted and locked.
  • Close Roof Vents and Windows: Prevent water or debris from entering during travel.
  • Check Tires: Inspect for proper pressure and any visible damage.
  • Disconnect Hookups:
    • Water: Turn off and disconnect hoses, and store properly.
    • Electric: Disconnect the power cord and store.
    • Sewer: Empty tanks, flush hoses, and store.
  • Secure Slide-Outs: Fully retract slide-outs and ensure locks are engaged.
  • Stow Gear: Secure outdoor items like chairs, rugs, or grills.

Interior Checks

  • Lock Cabinets and Drawers: Prevent items from shifting or falling.
  • Secure Loose Items: Stow appliances, decorations, and anything that could move.
  • Turn Off Appliances: Shut down and unplug all electrical devices.
  • Empty Trash: Dispose of trash to avoid odors.
  • Check Water Heater and Pump: Turn off water heater and water pump.

Mechanical and Systems

  • Check Fluid Levels: Inspect oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels.
  • Inspect Lights: Verify that headlights, taillights, and turn signals are working.
  • Test Brakes: Ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Ensure Proper Load Distribution: Confirm the RV is balanced and within weight limits.

Safety Checks

  • Secure Propane Tanks: Close valves and check for leaks.
  • Test Detectors: Confirm smoke, carbon monoxide, and propane detectors are working.
  • Emergency Equipment: Ensure the fire extinguisher is accessible and charged.

Final Walkaround

  • Do a complete 360-degree walkaround to double-check all compartments, jacks, steps, and exterior items are secure.

Departure

  • GPS and Route Plan: Program your GPS and verify your planned route avoids low bridges or restricted roads.
  • Mirrors and Cameras: Adjust mirrors and test backup cameras.
  • Brakes and Transmission: Test brakes and ensure your RV is in the appropriate gear for towing or driving.
